SUMMARY

(synopsis taken from GoodReads)

Ten years after they landed. All over the world. And they did nothing, standing on the surface of the Earth like trees, exerting their silent pressure on the world, as if there were no-one here and nothing under foot.

Ten years since we learned that there is intelligent life in the universe, but that they did not recognize us as intelligent or alive.

THOUGHTS & REVIEW

Oh… that was so messed up, but DAMN was it good!

Okay, so this one collects issues 1-8 in a single volume, and THANK GOODNESS FOR THAT. I don’t think I would have understood a single thing if I had to read it piece by pieces.

Tress takes place all over the world: militant China, a research facility in Svalbard, Somalia, the slums of Italy, what’s left of New York, and so much more. Each place has its own set of problems and unique characters that all add to the overall story and the cryptic message.

Why are the Trees here? Are they alive? Do they think? And if they do… what do they think of us pathetic humans scurrying around beneath them?

Another question: Can they communicate with us? And if they can… have they been doing so all along? Were we just too deaf, dumb, and blind to see… to listen… to respond back? And what will they do if we take too long to respond?

My biggest issue with Trees was the pacing — which is SLOW AS FUCK. You’ll have to have patience while reading this one, but by the end of the 8th issue, you’ll definitely being gasping for some of the twisted turn of events that take place. It also leaves us on one HECK of a cliffhanger, so this is my main reasoning for only giving the comic 4, MAYBE 4.5 Stars.

Also some seriously depressing shit happens towards the end that had my mouth hanging open for days because of how… graphic and heart-wrenching it was.

SO ONCE AGAIN – NOT A PERFECT 5.

As to any warnings I would give…

Some sexual content, vulgar language, violent imagery and the like. You know… the usual. Some major character deaths as well. :<

Would I recommend?

Oh yeah. Although I still hold to the belief that it would be better if whoever reads it was able to do so along with volume 2 (which I haven’t read yet, but anticipate to be just as good if not better than the first).

SONG & LYRICS

1. System of a Down – Toxicity

~LYRICS IN THE SONG THAT RESONATE STRONGEST~
( Pfft~ You mean, all of them? XD )

Conversion, software version 7.0
Looking at
life through the eyes of a tire hub

Eating seeds as a pastime activity
The toxicity of our city, of our city

New, what do you own the world?
How do you own disorder, disorder
Now, somewhere between the sacred silence, sacred silence and sleep
Somewhere between the sacred silence and sleep
Disorder, disorder, disorder

More wood for their fires, loud neighbours
Flashlight reveries caught in the headlights of a truck

Eating seeds as a pastime activity
The toxicity of our city, of our city

New, what do you own the world?
How do you own disorder, disorder
Now, somewhere between the sacred silence, sacred silence and sleep
Somewhere between the sacred silence and sleep
Disorder, disorder, disorder

New, what do you own the world?
How do you own disorder
Now, somewhere between the sacred silence, sacred silence and sleep
Somewhere between the sacred silence and sleep
Disorder, disorder, disorder

When I became the sun
I shone life into the man’s hearts
When I became the sun
I shone life into the man’s hearts

Reason for choosing this song

System of a Down’s, Toxicity  just seemed to capture the corruption and disorder of the world at large after the landing of the “Trees.”

I wouldn’t say the song is from the POV of any one character. I think it can be split between the different POVs that we see in the comic… The different cities, and the different states and levels of disarray, confusion, and disorder that’s proliferating the many cities’ walls, and furthermore corrupting the people within.

SUMMARY

(synopsis taken from Publisher)

Drugged, bound, and left as bait on the cusp of the lunar cycle, Wyatt Redding is faced with a terrifying set of no-win scenarios. Best case: he survives the coming days as a werewolf pack’s plaything and returns to the city as a second-class citizen with the mark—and protection—of the pack. Worst case: the wolves sate their lusts with Wyatt’s body, then send him home without their protection, condemning him to live out the rest of his short life as a slave to the worst of humanity’s scorn and abuse.

Wyatt’s only chance is to swallow every ounce of pride, bury his fear, and meekly comply with every wicked desire and carnal demand the wolf pack makes of him. He expects three days of sex and humiliation. What he doesn’t expect is to start enjoying it. Or to grow attached to his captor and pack Alpha, Cole.

As the lunar cycle ends, Wyatt begins to realize that the only thing to fear more than being sent home without the pack’s protection is being sent home at all.

THOUGHTS & REVIEW

. . .

I… have SO MANY WORDS for this book, it’s not even funny.

Nasty, lustful, unapologetic rape fantasy, wolf gangbang with not a trace of romance to be found in this depraved piece of kinky guilty pleasure. This book is pure, hardcore erotica at it’s best. Which means –  quite frankly – it’s not for everyone.

Even after all this time, I *still* don’t know what star rating to give this one. On one hand, this was definitely a guilty, filthy, delicious pleasure for me. On the other, I… I just couldn’t.

I think… I just simply won’t star this one.

Yeah. Yeah that sounds like a good plan to me. o__________o

Because if I did I would have to give it both a 1 AND 4.5 star rating for being both utterly disturbing and purely PWP, but also HOT. Like.. really… REALLY HOT. Would I buy this for myself? HELL YES. Did I have moments of “WTF?!” …HELL YES. Did I like it?  … HELL. FRIGGIN’. YES.

I think my biggest problem with this book is… that god-awfully misleading cover. I mean, it looks like your typical gay wolf shifter romance book with flowers and kisses and hugs and sweet caresses – which is SOOO not what this atrocious, 80-pager of a guilty pleasures is.

._______.

NOT. AT. ALL.

I would even go so far as to complain to the publisher to get that cover changed because… Good GODS, so many people are going to be traumatized by this book thinking it’s something it really, REALLY isn’t.

Tame A Wild Human is in no way a romance. Let me make this VERY CLEAR. This is… this is Stockholm syndrome + drugged up coercion + psychological breaking = “I’ll do whatever you want just make me feel good and don’t kill me pleasepleasePLEASE.” ._____. That’s what this is.

And lots of sex.

Because… well… SEX.

That’s really about it.

To describe the book in a quote from its pages:

“You need a dick in this ass, human. A lot of dicks. Fortunate for you that you’ll be fucked in abundance. Now shut up.”

It is an unreserved hardcore gangbang porno, primal and depraved, and unapologetically nasty. It’s sole purpose is to get you off, not make you swoon with pretty words or melt the frigid cold of one’s heart. There is no world-building, no relationship development, no character development, no plot or storyline besides a couple lines to explain why all this shit is happening. Then it’s repeated raping, gangraping, drugging, and more raping, humiliation and carnal degradation until it comes to its conclusion. Of more sex.

And some “Good boy *patpat* I think I’ll keep you because you haven’t displeased me yet.”

Yup. That’s it. End story. Move right along.

The best part about it was the intensity of the sex. What do you call it? The “heat level,” I believe? Yeah. That shit was THROUGH THE ROOF. It was erotic as all hell. You could slowly fall into the submission of Wyatt (the main character) as he began to give in, as the drugs began to do their work and rewire his brain, as he began to… want it. It was watching like the downward spiral of an addict as they go from clean, never touched a thing before to wanting their hourly fix or bump or hit again and again and again.

It was shameful. It was a debauchery. It was really good. It was like being possessed for a short 80-pages of your life.

This is why I can’t give it a rating, why even writing up a review is hard. Because it’s soooo WRONG, and yet really, REALLY good. I wonder if this is like what it feels like to be a devote Catholic or Christian when they say they’re wrestling with good and evil?

Yeah. Yeah this might just qualify for such a statement.

Kronk_Unbiased

As to any warnings I would give…

SO MANY. SADFGHULJKHFDG Uhh… okay, first off crazy all over the place trigger warning for this entire book. I would not let anyone read this book unless they fully knew what they were getting themselves into.

So to recap, we’ve got: rape, gangrape, humiliation, sexual humiliation, lots and lots of sex, non-con, Stockholm syndrome, abuse, explicit savage violence, hatefucking, psychological breaking, psychological and sexual training, objectification, abduction, drugging, torture… and that’s just in the first few pages.

Now I know someone people consider this book BDSM, but… I really, REALLY do not consider this BDSM. D/s? Okay. I’ll give you that. This is a wolf hierarchy here. But BDSM? I mean, from my albeit limited understanding of the BDSM world… even then there are rules. And both participants want what is happening. So it’s consensual, even if it’s fantasy rape/non-con/abduction/whathaveyou. It’s a FANTASY and thus something both want to enjoy and participate in. No matter how dangerous it can get.

But this book?

This book is about actual viciously repeated rape, abduction, drugging, gangbanging and whatnot where the main guy who this is happening to ISN’T EVEN GAY, he’s NOT into BDSM or anything even close to any of this, is only doing this because he DOES NOT WANT TO DIE, HAS NEVER HAD SEX WITH A GUY BEFORE, and furthermore is being fucked – repeatedly – in order to be BROKEN, not pleasured or because he wants it. But because the wolves fucking him do not see him as anything more than a hole to be used to sate their desire and – at best – an unfortunate, wicked creature to be molded into their perfect fucktoy.

Ta-da! 😀

cd6793c57da8a3ec3e76221a5df170e27213e348d1cf57dbccc98dc05a38f8db

I’m gonna be over here if you need me. Yeah. Over here.

Please. For all that is good and holy, do not read this book unless you are absolutely sure you want to, are reading it as fantasy porn, or are really fucked up in the head like I am and was CURIOUS after reading a review much like this one and ended up love-hating it as I do now. T_____T

I should feel bad about enjoying this book, but today is not that day.

tumblr_m9nu03UUYP1rsw1yf

Would I recommend?

I would recommend this book ONLY IF you are looking for a really hot ‘n kinky with no plot whatsoever, but HOT, non-con scenes and hurt-comfort-Stockholm-syndrome, weirdest-boner-right-now and/or weirdest-lady-boner-right-now book that you can read by yourself where no one can EVER KNOW.

However. If you’re looking for plot, or ANYTHING remotely consisting of a story, then please don’t. You’ll be traumatized FOR LIFE. I will not be responsible for the damage done to your eyes and your brain.

Otherwise, ENJOY.

And I mean it. ❤

5Track PLAYLIST & LYRICS

(Because one song just isn’t enough.)

1. A Perfect Circle – The Hollow

~LYRICS IN THE SONG THAT RESONATE STRONGEST~
(The whole song)

Run desire run
Sexual being
Run him like a blade
To and through the heart
No conscience
One Motive
Cater to the hollow

Screaming feed me here
Fill me up again
Temporarily pacify this hungering
So grow
Libido throw
Dominoes of indiscretions down
Falling all around
In cycles
In circles
Constantly consuming
Conquer and devour

2. Zilch – Fucktrack #6
(HIGHLY Sexually Explicit Song; VERY, VERY NSFW)

~LYRICS IN THE SONG THAT RESONATE STRONGEST~
(The whole song works, but these lyrics in particular…)

I am absolute corruption
Absolute corruption
(I wanna fuck you… in the ass… Until you bleed!)
I am the power that sways
I am the beast that’s in human nature
I am the masonry of greed
Tease me, please me, don’t believe me
I will suck and fuck the very heart of you
Into two
Need me, bleed me, don’t believe me
I will separate every fucking part of you
Into two
3. Placebo – My Sweet Prince

~LYRICS IN THE SONG THAT RESONATE STRONGEST~
(There’s something about this whole song that just WORKS.)

Never thought you’d make me perspire.
Never thought I’d do you the same.
Never thought I’d fill with desire.
Never thought I’d feel so ashamed.
4. Queens of the Stone Age – Sick, Sick, Sick

~LYRICS IN THE SONG THAT RESONATE STRONGEST~

Eternal eclipse in the teeth of the risk,
The tounge is a twist in perpetual bliss ,
Forever midnight forever midnight…,
Sick, Sick, Sick,
Don’t resist,
Sick, Sick, Sick,
Don’t resist,
(I’m gonna change,
I don’t wanna change),
Sick, Sick, Sick,
Don’t resist,
Sick, Sick, Sick,
Don’t resist
5. Savage Garden – Break Me, Shake Me

~LYRICS IN THE SONG THAT RESONATE STRONGEST~

I never thought I’d change my
opinion again
But you moved me in a way that I’ve
never known
You moved me in a way that I’ve
never known
But straight away you just moved
into position again
You abused me in a way that I’ve
never known
You abused me in a way that I’ve
never known

[chorus:]
So break me shake me hate me
take me over
When the madness stops then you
will be alone
Just break me shake me hate me
take me over
When the madness stops then you
will be alone

Reason for choosing these songs

I don’t know if it was during or after reading the book that these songs became to resonate with me and THIS SICK (AMAZING) BOOK.

Though there really isn’t anything to spoiler in this thing… I’ll be vague-ish and only comment on the ones that really seem like, “UM, WHAT???”

Track 1: Wolves song during a full moon cycle (to their prey). Or likewise just Cole’s song (to Wyatt, perhaps? or to just anyone who’d help fill his hunger and lust).

Track 2: This entire song is… about… nasty, kinky, painful sex. It’s basically the book’s theme song. End of story. (Plus that heavy beat just makes you think “Drugged, Fucked out of one’s mind, and Addicted to whatever comes one’s way.”)

Track 3: I see this as the song to capture a soul-deep change in Wyatt. Once Wyatt’s seriously been “tamed” and even starts thinking of Cole as “his wolf” and tries to play games with him later in the book, only to have everything backfire on him… kinda

Track 4: Probably a Cole to Wyatt song.

Track 5: Always think of this as my reckless abandon song. It’s one that gets put to a lot of books or playlist I make if the situation calls for it. In this case…. THE SITUATION CALLS FOR IT.

The Specific Heat Capacity of Love,” or as I like to call it “The Most HORRIFIC, TEAR-JERKIN’, TEAR MY HEART OPEN WHYDONTCHA Book That Has Ever Existed” will forever be the bane of my existence. Because that — is its real title. I think something DIED IN ME after reading this short, 35-pager… something I doubt I will ever recover again.

The art is exquisite. It’s in gorgeous full color too, so there is SO MUCH MORE DEPTH AND GLORIOUSNESS TO EACH PAGE. It leaves you breathless. The story itself is sadly quite short, but that’s actually the point. It’s so… tragic, and overpowering. You will not know what to do with yourself afterwards.

When I finished reading this horrid little asdfghjkl;’lkjhgfdsadfghj back in March (I think… the 13th? or something…) I was just in shock. I STILL have NO WORDS for what I read, or for HOW I didn’t know about the inhumane topic the story talks about in great detail.

HEADS UP Y’ALL. THIS IS NOT ONLY A REVIEW BUT AN INSANELY IMPORTANT TIL (Today I Learned) WHICH Y’ALL SHOULD BE MADE AWARE OF:

I just learned about some horrible because of a manhua I was reading: shark finning.

Pictures are of a graphic nature. Proceed at your own discretion.

The cost of this disgusting act.

WHAT THEY *DO* TO THEM.

THE HELL PEOPLE! WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?! Listen. I understand if you want to eat the fucking fish. I GET that. But why the hell can’t you just kill it properly and put the poor thing out of its misery first?! Why oh WHY would you LEAVE IT ALIVE AND IN PAIN TO DIE THROUGH SUFFOCATION AND DROWNING VIA A SLOW AND GROTESQUELY PAINFUL DEATH?!?

Assdffgghjjkkllllkjoiuuttfds Jfc Jfc jfc JFCCCCCCCCCHRIST what the hell is wrong with people? I don’t know if I’m more horrified I didn’t know about this or simply disgusted with humanity as a whole.

PLEASE. FOR ALL THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY IN THIS WORLD: STOP. SHARK. FINNING.

As to any warnings I would give…

DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU WISH TO LOSE PART OF YOUR SOUL.

Because that is the price you will pay for reading the most tragically moving short I’ve ever laid eyes on.

You’ve been forewarned.

Would I recommend?

I DON’T KNOW!! I feel like EVERYONE should read this because it has such an important message (alongside an incredible beautiful and heartbreaking tale)… Yet at the same time, this book is PAINFUL. There is SO MUCH PAIN. I don’t want to send people to their early graves yet either…

Open wide being free
A minute everlasting with you

~LYRICS IN THE SONG THAT RESONATE STRONGEST~
(The whole song works, but these lyrics in particular…)

We’re only 2cm away now, I’ll be home again
I’ll be home again to a place that might have been
Where people in the past times thought they were waterfalls around the edge of the sea

Cause our love is deeper and believer of the sea
Cause you’re the waves of my ocean
You’re the waves of my ocean

And show it to you one day
You alone indeed
You sing so adamantly
And it fills my mind with thoughts so fine
Don’t ask too much of me oh Heal me now, heal me now
Heal me now, heal me now Don’t erase me
Cut me out replace me
I’m still here
I’m not going anywhere
You alone indeed
You sing so adamantly
Let it free what ever’s locked inside
Don’t ask too much of me
5. Assemblage23 – Lullaby

~LYRICS IN THE SONG THAT RESONATE STRONGEST~
(The whole song)

May you find solace in the gentle arms of sleep
Despite the wolves outside your door

And if ever fate should choose to smite you
Stand your ground, never walk away
Please don’t ever let the world defeat you
Don’t get buried in its decay

6. Mae – The Sun & The Moon

~LYRICS IN THE SONG THAT RESONATE STRONGEST~

But when worlds collide,
and all that I have is all that I want.

All that I am is yours.
Ohh…
Painted skies.
I’ve seen so many that cannot compare
to your ocean eyes.
7. Radiohead – How To Disappear Completely

~LYRICS IN THE SONG THAT RESONATE STRONGEST~
(The whole song)

That there
That’s not me
I go
Where I please
I walk through walls
I float down the Liffey
I’m not here
This isn’t happening
I’m not here
I’m not here
In a little while
I’ll be gone
The moment’s already passed
Yeah it’s gone
And I’m not here
This isn’t happening
I’m not here
I’m not here
8. Mirah – Archipelago

~LYRICS IN THE SONG THAT RESONATE STRONGEST~

So goodbye my love,

I’ll give it up into the fog.
Goodbye my love,
I think I knew it all along.
9. Keane – We Might As Well Be Strangers

~LYRICS IN THE SONG THAT RESONATE STRONGEST~

I don’t know your face, no more
Or feel the touch that I adore
I don’t know your face, no more

We might as well be living in a different world
We might as well
We might as well
We might as well
10. Idiot Pilot – Strange We Should Meet Here

~LYRICS IN THE SONG THAT RESONATE STRONGEST~

I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete

Oh simple thing where have you gone?
I’m getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you’re gonna let me in
I’m getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me
Is this the place we used to love?
Is this the place that I’ve been dreaming of?

13. Tracy Chapman – You’re The One

~LYRICS IN THE SONG THAT RESONATE STRONGEST~
(The whole song)

Some say you’re bitter
Think you’re mean
Uncouth untamed and unrestrained
But I think you’re sensitive and sweet
Stay as you are don’t change a thing
.
Let’em talk you down
Call you names
My mind’s made up
It ain’t gonna change
I’m sure in my heart
Happy and free
You’re the one you’re the one
You’re the one for me
14. Ben Jelen – Give It All Away

~LYRICS IN THE SONG THAT RESONATE STRONGEST~

But with demons sitting at my side,
An angel’s come to ask me why
And slowly I give up inside to say
To feel alive, I’d give it all away
15. Nine Inch Nails – Something I Can Never Have

~LYRICS IN THE SONG THAT RESONATE STRONGEST~

I still recall the taste of your tears.
Echoing your voice just like the ringing in my ears.
My favorite dreams of you still wash ashore.
Scraping through my head ’till I don’t want to sleep anymore.
.
This thing is slowly taking me apart.
Grey would be the color if I had a heart.
.
In this place it seems like such a shame.
Though it all looks different now,
I know it’s still the same
Everywhere I look you’re all I see.
Just a fading fucking reminder of who I used to be.

16. The Features – The Idea of Growing Old

~LYRICS IN THE SONG THAT RESONATE STRONGEST~

We can talk all night, we can talk all day
We can play charades when there is nothing to say
You turn me on to the idea of growing oldNow it won’t be long
No, it won’t be long
Whoa, whoa, whoaYou turn me on to the idea of growing old
Turn me on to the idea of growing old
We can lay around and count the number of times
I’ve acted foolish and you’ve rolled your eyes
You turn me on to the idea of growing old

Reason for choosing these songs

Each one has it’s own special attribute that somehow resonates with me.

I could go into exact detail, but that would be giving too much of this story away, and it’s short enough as is. You need to read it for yourself to see what I mean, and then listen to the songs.

IT’LL JUST MAKE SENSE THAT WAY.

However, if you still want some vague reasons, we can do that too… (Just be prepared for some spoilers, even out of the highlighted areas.)

Track 1: From Bird’s POV. A song from Bird to Fish.

Track 2: Alternating between Bird and Fish’s POV. A song to each other.

Track 3: From Bird’s POV to Fish as he contemplates joining him once again in the ocean.

Track 4: Fish’s last theme song (but can also be seen as both Fish & Bird’s song, from the time of their separation)

Track 5: From Girl on the Beach to Bird & Fish as she reunites them together. Or even from Bird to Fish, or Fish to Bird… a death song. A requiem.

Track 6: Bird & Fish’s first meeting, and probably every one thereafter

Track 7: Bird’s theme song.

Track 8: Bird coming to terms with Fish’s death

Track 9: From Bird’s POV after so long being alone, missing Fish, missing what they once had and mourning what was lost

Track 10: Yet another death song, but this one more specifically from Bird’s POV. How he feels it’s his fault Fish died, and how he wishes someone would just end his life too so the two of them can be reunited, and “the moment we die, our souls will re-align.”

Track 11: From Bird’s POV. Life without Fish, and how he came to be on the beach in the first place. All his endless wandering finally brought him back here. To this place, where he lost Fish forever.

Track 12: Friendship/Love theme song; from Fish to Bird, from Bird to Fish.

Track 13: How Bird probably saw Fish / Probably also how Fish saw Bird (but we’ll never really know since we don’t get any of the story from his POV — still I think it can be inferred seeing his reaction to Fish whenever they were together)

Track 14: From Bird’s POV. The “angel” is the girl on the beach, the “demons” are mankind in general and the horrible memories of what happened. He’d “give it all away” to “feel alive again” by ending his life so he can be with Fish again.

Track 15: From Bird’s POV at the start of the story, he’s sitting there, remembering, dying, crying, wanting something he can never have.

Track 16: Though this one doesn’t completely fit the story, somehow… every time I hear it now I think of them. I think of it from both of their POV when they first met and however long a time they were together. Before meeting each other, they must have both been very lonely creatures, sort of shunned from their own kind. But after meeting and knowing one another… they… sort of “turned each other on to the idea of growing old” AKA “living a long, happy life”, so long as they had each other. So long… as they were together. And… uggghhuu… T________________T *UGLY SOBBING*

SUMMARY

(synopsis from Goodreads)

Elle Peterssen is young, wealthy, and beautiful – and there is a reason someone tried to kill her. Only, Elle doesn’t remember any of this.

Mind the Gap, the new series by the Eisner Award-winning writer JIM McCANN (Return of the Dapper Men), is a mystery with a paranormal twist.

Elle, in a spirit form detached from her comatose body, must not only unravel the mystery of her attacker’s identity and motive but her entire life as well.

Who can she trust, in both this word and in the gap she exists in that lies between life and death? Filled with twists and turns, Elle’s life isn’t the only one turned upside down by the attack on her life.

Deceit, secrets, and hidden agendas are everywhere in a story where everyone is a suspect, and no one is innocent.

*Collects Mind the Gap #1-5.

REVIEW

This one gets 4.5 Stars.

Ho boy! I was NOT expecting to like this one as much as I did. I honestly thought this was going to be another scenario of me falling for the cover and rolling my eyes at the contents, but asdfghjkl;lkjhgf I’m SO glad that wasn’t the case. XD What really surprised me was the complex story and phenomenal mystery element that ran through the story from start to finish. An excellent combination of gorgeous artwork and captivating storytelling that brought to life the characters and world of Mind The Gap.

So far, I don’t really have a character I don’t like. I mean, even the nasty characters are being perfectly spot-on to their role as antagonists. I will admit that I might absolutely be in love with Jo, if for no other reason then for what she did on page 90, 91, and 92 with the freakin’ candles and altars and proclaiming she’ll chant and dance naked if it’ll help get her friend back.  Power to you, girl! You’re totally rockin’ my world. That’s a real friend for ya.
anigif_enhanced-10958-1407468769-6

I’m really curious as to where this story will go next. The classic whodunit routine is peppered with some newer elements but sticks closely to the typical mystery theme, with a bit of X-Files type drama to go along with it. I’m liking where it’s going, but only so long as it keeps me interested. Some things were predictable (at least to me) so I’ve got a feeling that I might have some idea as to what will go down in the next installment. Nonetheless, it’s definitely worth waiting to find out.

One thing that kinda bugged me were all of the pop culture references and shameless advertising for actors, products, tourism, and media references. I get this is comics, and that sorta thing happens constantly, but it was a little weird.

Not to mention the heavy song references at the beginning might have been a bit overdone. I got no problem with music in mah books (I’m a music junkie to the extreme so this can never displease me), but I would really appreciate it having some purpose besides its blatant advertisement and promotional appeal. Like if the songs actually related back to anything of significance to Elle’s life or something. ANYTHING.

I mean, the references to some songs will only make sense if people know the music (or in some cases, the music video aka cue random mention of bee girl from some random music video. WTF). Otherwise it sort of jars you out of the story and the continuity of whatever is going on. I had a few moments like that, and I’m probably the biggest music whore you’ll ever meet. If it has a beat, I probably know it or I soon as heck will! And yet, I still had a problem with the odd placement of some of the music inserts.

But all those things aside, I really enjoyed seeing all the diversity in this comic. POC, lesbians (one a DOCTOR and the other a COP! AND MARRIED NO LESS!!! *does a little happydance jig*), a biracial family, social class deconstructs… NON-IRRITATING MAIN AND SUPPORTING FEMALE CHARACTERS!

Deception and mayhem! Questions upon questions!

And all the behind-the-scenes sleuthing from so many angles! *siiiiiiiiiiigh* That’s the good life. I’m happy with the turn-out.

GIMME THE NEXT VOLUME NOW.

651940

As to any warnings I would give…

None that I can think of. General trippy-ness, but that’s about it.

Would I recommend?

Oh yeah! Definitely! This one’s a keeper! I’ll be purchasing a copy once it comes out myself!

Orgy – Fiction (Dreams In Digital)

Reason for choosing these songs

Fiction (Dreams In Digital) by Orgy is a song I feel captures the entire essence of the book (and probably the whole series). I especially think the first verse pertains so closely to the entire situation at hand that it’s like the song was made for this book (or more likely… the book was made from the song). Either way, Elle is lost and living in a world of her imagination, trying to figure out what’s happening and where her place in all this is. Those in the “waking world” are just as lost as to what’s actually happened. And all the while there’s someone out there hunting her, toying with her, trying… to finish the job. The control over her life is gone, but she’s still fighting, still trying to find her way back to the waking world and the ones she loves.

Also, the whole sound of this song seems to work for me. The minute I started reading this graphic novel, this song just started floating through my mind. It just works no matter which way I look at it.

LYRICS

When You’re Gone
for she’s lost in coma where it’s beautiful
intoxicated from the deep sleep, deep sleep
do you wonder what it’s like
living in a permanent imagination?
sleeping to escape reality, but you like it like that

guilty by design
she’s nothing more then fiction.
she dreams in digital,
cause it’s better then nothing.
now that control is gone,
it seems unreal,
she’s dreaming in digital.
cause it’s better then nothing.
now that control is gone,
it seems unreal,
she’s dreaming in digital.
she dreams in digital.

and your pixel army can’t save you now
my finger’s on the kill switch
i remember i used to compose your dreams
control your dreams
and don’t be afraid to expose yourself
before i shut you down
you made some changes since the virus caught you sleeping

guilty by design
she’s nothing more then fiction.
she dreams in digital,
cause it’s better then nothing.
now that control is gone,

REVIEW

This review can also be found on GoodReads

This one gets 5 Stars.

I think every single book in this series gets 5 stars. I can’t not give this book 5 stars because… though it has moments of slow, filler pages at times… everything eventually leads back to the complex and rich plot of this strange alternate world.

I still have absolutely NO idea what the heck is going on with Hoshiminokoto or his plans with this world, Chigusa, Rakan, the Ayame Prince, and Kinrei… but I feel like we’re definitely heading towards an epic reveal soon! I think it might happen in the next book or the one right after, depending on how long it actually takes them to get to the Capitol.

Also, I still think the guy’s a creep and needs to seriously stay the fuck away from Chigusa. o___o I’m absolutely with Rakan and the rest of the Guard on this one! Everyone needs to make a protective shield around him and just keep all the haters away.

Haters_to_the_left_zps1e27c141

Oh yeah. And I’m just going putting this out there:

This book had a LOT of feels. Mostly between Kinrei and The Ayame Prince, and Rakan and Chigusa.

And Narushige and his sister…..
sdfghjkl;kjhgfhjdaADFHSKJLDANALKFNALK
SO. MANY. FEEEEELS.
More than just a little excited to find out what happens next!

As to any warnings I would give…

Hmm… not particularly now that I think about it. 🙂

Would I recommend?

Mary Elizabeth McGlynn – When You’re Gone

Cardigans – Erase & Rewind

Reason for choosing these songs

When You’re Gone by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn is a song I feel works for two relationships: Rakan & Chigusa, as well as The Ayame Prince & Kinrei. I feel like the lyrics really match what’s going on right now in book 20, where so much is being revealed, including how these characters feel for one another. Whether you want to read into it as slashable or not, is entirely up to you. (I certainly do, but that’s just me. :P)

My other song choice is Erase & Rewind by Cardigans which I feel better suits the whole series. I don’t want to give anything away as these are HUGE spoilers for the entire series, but as the series progresses… pretty much every single character finds out that none of them are who they thought they were, and it just goes to show that nothing is what it seems. I feel this song resonates strongest with 3 different themes:

 1. The first is the running theme of people being “puppets” to others, being used either knowingly or otherwise…
 2. The second is the theme of altering memories, losing one’s memories, or reinventing oneself.
 3. And the final is the theme of loneliness, being outcast, or unwanted.

LYRICS

When You’re Gone
Did I wait too long?
Moments gone and now wasted
Coming back to home
It feels wrong, changes haunt me
Ends I came before
Leave me lost, confused, searching
Everything I own
Takes me back nowhere

Objects in my room
They might be telling me something soon
Still you ask me how I feel
I feel lost – that’s how I feel

I know, I know
There’s something I’ve forgotten
Like a time, a place
A shattered memory
For me it’s more
Than I can seem to handle
It’s the pain, my mind
Is writing on the wall
The truth, you lied
You said it can convince you to
Give up, this place
Will never set me free
Enough, I know
I really did it this time
It’s a sign, this place
Is somewhere I should be

Taking a piece of my heart
When you’re gone

Are my eyes too blind
To find illusions from deep inside, growing?
What I lost to find
And what I find brings me here

I know, I know
There’s something I’ve forgotten
Like a time, a place
A shattered memory
For me it’s more
Than I can seem to handle
It’s the pain, my mind
Is writing on the wall
The truth, you lied
You said it can convince you to
Give up, this place
Will never set me free
Enough, I know
I really did it this time
It’s a sign, this place
Is somewhere I should be

Taking a piece of my heart
That’s how it always starts
When you’re gone

Erase & Rewind
Hey, what did you hear me say
you know the difference it makes
what did you hear me say

Yes, I said it’s fine before
I don’t think so no more
I said it’s fine before
I’ve changed my mind
I take it back

Erase and rewind
’cause I’ve been changing my mind
I’ve changed my mind

So where did you see me go
it’s not the right way, you know
where did you see me go
No, it’s not that I don’t know
I just don’t want it to grow
It’s not that I don’t know
I’ve changed my mind
I take it back

Books ‘N Tunes #2: Signal To Noise

Hullo everyone! I’m back with another installment for the Books ‘N Tunes Reading Challenge. Complications, as always, try to hinder the creation of the 8tracks playlist I was going to use, so I might have to end up choosing another platform for the completed list. Who knows… :/

But never you mind! I’ve got a special treat this time! Two songs for one book. 🙂

SUMMARY

(taken from GoodReads)

It’s been three years since the Incursion; three long years since Bastian and his twin brother Theo became the sole survivors on the planet Noise. Their distress calls have gone unanswered, and they are running out of supplies. They have no one but each other. And when the long-awaited rescue finally arrives, it brings with it complications that make being alone and forgotten look easy.

WARNING: Please note that this story features incest.

REVIEW

This review can also be found on GoodReads

Originally I was torn over what star rating I wanted to give this book… but now I’m more sure.

This one gets 4 Stars.

I honestly wasn’t sure what to think when I first read the descript for this book. I gravitated towards it because I saw the words twins and M/M romance eventually realized that would translate to twincest, but I still had my reservations.

By the time I finished reading, those reservations were quite gone. xD

I won’t say it was perfect, because it wasn’t. But daaaayum was it GOOD. REAL good, in fact. There could have been more overall world-building and character development going on between some of the cast, but I can’t say I’m entirely disappointed with the current results. One thing I did love was how well rounded (as INDIVIDUALS, yet wholly connected and dependent on one another) the twins were. As characters they really worked for me. They were believable, funny, quickminded a bit beyond their years though also teenagers and capable of acting like such… Brothers, even after taking their relationship to the next level. I just really bought it and loved the portrayal of their love and affection for each other.

Couldn’t ask for anything more.

What I didn’t like was the sudden shift in so many of the other characters… particularly Ventura who literally seemed to go from decent guy (and one of my more favourite characters) to backstabbing asshole in a flash. At least Striker was consistent. :/ Bane, on the other hand, was a character I could only dispassionately like, for he seemed so… unreliable as a person (which worked for him in this story, but as a person I just couldn’t like him for his lack of principles and furthermore, his lack of simply taking an actual side. Either you’re trying to help them or you’re not. It’s not that difficult.) It would have been something if all his uncertainty was just simply because he didn’t want to hurt or betray the twins by following orders, but it wasn’t. He just lacked the conviction to simply make up his damned mind until it was made up for him and suddenly he’s all, “Oh thank goodness you two are alright!”

bullshit

Some characters are just assholes trying to be hapless victims. Bane, just stfu.

As to any warnings I would give…

UM. WELL. There’s graphic and very detailed sex scenes that feature twincest (click the link if you don’t know what that is) and some zombie-esque horror elements. Some trigger warnings are some scenes of PTSD, claustrophobia, panic attacks, and separation anxiety.

OH! And mention of underage sexual activities.

Since that’s “a thing” some people seem to get all squirmy over.

Why? I have no idea.

You were all kids once. Get over yourselves.

Would I recommend?

Y’know what? I absolutely WOULD. I wasn’t sure at first… but now that I’ve thought about it, I really enjoyed this book. Especially the boys. Bravo!

TUNES

The Cranberries – Zombie

Coldplay – What If?

Reason for choosing these songs

Zombie by The Cranberries is a really emotional song that precisely expresses the trauma and violence of war, and its impact on not just the warriors that battle on the field, but also when they return (or never return at all). It’s about how the battle’s never really over. How they keep fighting, even within their minds. How war and the horrors of it, forever change them, mold them into permenant fixtures on the battlefield. How the zombies of their past keep haunting, haunting…

Although the other characters are seasoned fighters and furthermore “the adults” in the situation, it is the boys Bastian and Theo who are forever haunted by the zombies of their past, or the unknown horrors that have forever lurked just outside their perimeter walls.

What If? by Coldplay takes a very different approach from Zombie. It’s a shorter song for one, a little over 4 minutes, and yet… it’s just as moving – if not moreso – than Zombie’s haunting lyrics. I choose What If? to embody the internal struggle that starts to arise in Bastian and Theo once the boys’ “rescue” appears and there are suddenly others. Not them. Not… just, Bastian and Theo anymore. Their world is flipped upsidedown, and with it comes the alarming realization that they are no longer the only two people in all the world anymore. In fact, once it becomes obvious that they’ll be leaving Noise soon, another thought comes to mind… one they’d never considered before. That they’ll be other people – girls, boys, young and old – someone… other than each other. They’ll have a choice… a choice which could destroy what they have now, the relationship they’ve built over their entire young lives.

And… what if…. what if one of them should decide… that he doesn’t want the other brother by his side anymore? What if…. seeing how normal people act and have relationships… he suddenly doesn’t want to be a freak… or want to be in the kind of relationship that would label him and his twin as one?

What if…

LYRICS

Zombie
Another head hangs lowly,
Child is slowly taken.
And the violence caused such silence.
Who are we mistaken?

But you see, it’s not me, it’s not my family.
In your head, in your head they are fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are crying…

In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What’s in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, dou, dou, dou, dou, dou…

Another mother’s breakin’
Heart is taking over
When the violence causes silence,
We must be mistaken.

It’s the same old theme since nineteen-sixteen.
In your head, in your head they’re still fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are dying…

In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What’s in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, oh, oh,
Oh, oh, oh, oh, hey, oh, ya, ya-a…

What If?
What if there was no lie
Nothing wrong, nothing right
What if there was no time
And no reason, or rhyme
What if you should decide
That you don’t want me there by your side
That you don’t want me there in your life
What if I got it wrong
And no poem or song
Could put right what I got wrong
Or make you feel I belong

What if you should decide
That you don’t want me there by your side
That you don’t want me there in your life

Ooh ooh-ooh, that’s right
Let’s take a breath, jump over the side
Ooh ooh-ooh, that’s right
How can you know it, if you don’t even try
Ooh ooh-ooh, that’s right

Every step that you take
Could be your biggest mistake
It could bend or it could break
That’s the risk that you take

What if you should decide
That you don’t want me there in your life
That you don’t want me there by your side

Ooh ooh-ooh, that’s right
Let’s take a breath, jump over the side
Ooh ooh-ooh, that’s right
How can you know it, when you don’t even try
Ooh ooh-ooh, that’s right

Oh – Ooh ooh-ooh, that’s right,
Let’s take a breath, jump over the side.
Ooh ooh-ooh, that’s right,
You know that darkness always turns into light.
Ooh-ooh, that’s right

Books ‘N Tunes #1: With Pride

I was debating on how I’d want to chronicle my progress for the Books ‘N Tunes Reading Challenge, and I’ve finally decided on creating a single playlist on 8tracks with all the songs for each and every book I read for this challenge.

Each month, I’ll post one or two entries for the Books ‘N Tunes reading challenge and add to the 8tracks list. (Note: Until I have at least 8 songs on the list, the playlist can’t be published. When I’ve got at least 8 songs, I will update with a direct link to the playlist I’m tentatively calling “Watch My Eyes & Know I Lie.”) I’ll also add a brief review with cover image and basic book details to each entry as well, to complete the post.

So without further adieu, I present the first book and its accompanying song to be added to the list:

SUMMARY

(taken from GoodReads)

When his sister falls ill, Kristof is ordered to assume a duty never meant for him: become the Duke of Stehlmore and marry a notorious Prince of the Blood. It is one of the oldest honors and duties undertaken by his family, but Kristof feels only resentment that he must leave behind all he knows to serve an arrogant half-demon.

His resentment must be set aside, however, when evil is found lurking far too close to the castle—an evil that has many pieces, controlled by someone they cannot find and who always seems one step ahead of them. Someone who seems to think that demons are little more than toys …

REVIEW

This one gets a solid 4 Stars.

I actually liked this one less than the first book, but still REALLY enjoyed it nonetheless. What I’m really loving – writing wise – is how the series is moving along backwards in time. That’s a really neat feature which I don’t see all that often in books I read. It definitely explains away some of the vagueness of the first book, especially in terms of the rest of the Legion, which we don’t really get to know too much about in the first novel. Now, in With Pride, we get to see yet another aspect of the Legion, and I can only suspect we’ll see yet another side in the final(???) installment to the series.

I cannot WAIT.

TUNE

Nao Hiiragi – Requiem

Reason for choosing the song

It’s probably one of the saddest songs on the face of the plane—okay, so that’s not entirely true, but it is pretty frickin’ sad. XD The moment I started reading about Hakon’s backstory (especially about his brother… ughhhhhhhh @______@) I started hearing this song, faintly, in the back of my mind. By the time I was finished reading With Pride, this song was full blown taking over my consciousness and I was humming and singing it under my breath all night long.

I hate it. I hate this book. I hate this song. I hate LIFE.

But damn are they utterly perfect for one another.

Just go ahead then and break my damn heart. Not like I was using it anyway. T___________T

LYRICS
(translated)

I wonder
Will you one day be able to tell me?
Without a doubt in a gentle voice
My soul is a sparkling star
Of drowning tears

A future of nothing but sadness that finally comes
I will sleep through it forever

I wonder,
Will I ever be able to let go of that hand?
I’m certain your gentle smile
Will shake my soul
And I will shed tears glittering like stars

Let me be by your side
Let this moment continues
The sky at dusk
And the dark blue nights
Are both being burned into my heart
As the days we spent together
