MASTERPOST – Resources

Blogs & Book Resources

The Word Detective: The Word Detective on the Web is the online version of The Word Detective, a newspaper column answering readers’ questions about words and language.

Tor.com:  is a site for science fiction, fantasy, and all the things that interest SF and fantasy readers, presents original short fiction, new sequential art, extensive art galleries, and commentary on science fiction and related subjects by a wide range of writers from all corners of the science fiction and fantasy field; both professionals working in the genres and fans.

♦ Crossed Genres: is a small press publisher of progressive speculative fiction based in Framingham, Massachusetts. It’s the mission of Crossed Genres Publications to give a voice to people often ignored or marginalized in SFF, which has led us to publish titles focused on older women, overweight women, immigration, skilled laborers, QUILTBAG families, and people marginalized throughout history. The magazine is free to read online, is available in yearly subscriptions (print and ebook), and is published in biannual anthologies (print and ebook).

Laura Books Plus: YA books, adult books, LGBTQ (QUILTBAG) themes.

Best-Sellers Initially Rejected – to remind oneself everything is gonna be alright

Goodreads: discover new titles, share what you’re reading with friends (potential and current), make your online collection known!

LibraryThing: I don’t really use this one much, but I hear it’s pretty good! Depending on how things go, I might open an account. I have a big enough collection to archive, after all. XD

RisingShadow.net: Risingshadow is one of the largest science fiction and fantasy book databases. Here you can find detailed book information and absorbing reviews.

StrangeHorizons: is a magazine of and about speculative fiction and related nonfiction. Speculative fiction includes science fiction, fantasy, horror, slipstream, and all other flavors of fantastika.

Lethe Press (Speculative Fiction, Science Fiction & the Supernatural): a independent publisher in the old style. They curate their booklist and put out books they love. Most of our titles are focused on gay and lesbian lives, but they’ve got interests beyond their own community.

♦ List of LGBT-themed speculative fiction: Probably my new favorite page on the internet. I’m going through the list and seeing so many titles I want to read, and a few I managed to find over the years using all my finite resources at the time. Seeing this mega-list, however, really lifts my spirits. I cannot begin to express the joy it brings (and the tears my wallet will shed upon coughing up the funds to purchase everything in here).

♦ Lists of LGBT figures in fiction and myth: contains a large amount of materials on the topic of QUILTBAG figures in fiction and myth separated into categories: film, television and radio, animation, modern written fiction, video games, and speculative fiction; as well as articles with QUILTBAG themes in comics, mythology, and video games.

Bookstores – Both Online and Offline

BookStrand: erotica and romance ebooks primarily. There is also regular fiction and nonfiction books, but I highly doubt that will be why you’re going there…

Amazon: pretty much everything. Fiction, Nonfiction, textbooks, genre fiction, erotica, mystery, horror, scifi, fantasy, thriller, best sellers… You name it, they probably have it. (Although not the best and greatest book-buying website in the world… still pretty decent considering.)

DreamSpinner Press: ebooks and print books

Barnes and Nobles: not my favorite site AT ALL to buy anything, much less books. But — to each their own!

♦ LGBT eBookshop: is a division of Bella Distribution Services, a leader in providing lgbt titles to bookstores and customers world-wide since 2005.
