Title: Battle Royale
Author: Koushun Takami
Translated By: Yuji Oniki
Page Length: 617 pages
Synopsis: Koushun Takami’s notorious high-octane thriller is based on an irresistible premise: a class of junior high school students is taken to a deserted island where, as part of a ruthless authoritarian program, they are provided arms and forced to kill one another until only one survivor is left standing. Criticized as violent exploitation when first published in Japan – where it then proceeded to become a runaway bestseller – Battle Royale is a Lord of the Flies for the 21st century, a potent allegory of what it means to be young and (barely) alive in a dog-eat-dog world. Made into a controversial hit movie of the same name, Battle Royale is already a contemporary Japanese pulp classic, now available for the first time in the English language.
“I just didn’t want to be a loser anymore…” ― Koushun Takami, Battle Royale
“I didn’t realize it until now, but I don’t really know anything about them, or what kind of people they are, really. You can’t see inside a person’s heart.”
― Koushun Takami, Battle Royale
Why did I chose this book?
I…. LOVE… THIS… BOOK.
The depths of disturbing cannot be described in mere words alone. This book is… sooo messed up. Long before Hunger Games or anything the contemporary world came to know as “let’s send children to their deaths to have to kill each other” – was the one, the only, THE ORIGINAL… fuckin’ Battle Royale.
IF you’ve seen the movie, you’ll already have a good idea of how disturbing a mind you’d have to have to enjoy – or better yet, WRITE – this insanity.
If you enjoyed the movie… you’ll find the book EVEN MORE FRIGHTENING.
To put it simply, there were moments in the book… several key moments in the book… that were actually TOO GRAPHIC and HORRIFIC TO ADD TO THE MOVIE.
I kid you not.
If this appeals to you, as I know it soooo would to me (had I not read it before), then grab yourself a copy and get to readin’! This one’s a bit of a doozy. Depending on your copy this book can fall anywhere between 600-800 pages, so beware~~
What I love/like about it:
- The amount of psychological bullshit these kids are put through
- The amount of psychological bullshit these kids put YOU through by the end of this fuckin’ book
- Kids being forced to kill other kids
- Kids WILLING and HAPPILY killing other kids because they’re suddenly been given permission to do so at no consequence.
- Realizing there’s a very thin line between the psycho in you and the psycho in me
Warnings or Triggers
Anything you can imagine is probably in this book. FAIR WARNING. Violence, violence, and — oh yeah, did I mention violence? It’s a gory tale.
